McKAY SCHOLARSHIP

The McKay Scholarships for Students with Disabilities Program expands statewide the center choice program originally created in 1999 as a pilot program. The scholarships are available for eligible students with disabilities to attend an eligible public or private center of their choice. Students with disabilities include K-12 students who are documented as having a mental handicap, including trainable, profound, or educable; a speech or language impairment; a hearing impairment, including deafness; a visual impairment, including blindness; a dual sensory impairment; a physical impairment; a serious emotional disturbance, including an emotional handicap; a specific learning disability, including, but not limited to, dyslexia, dyscalculia, or developmental aphasia; a traumatic brain injury; or autism.

Eligibility Requirements

In order to be eligible for the McKay Scholarship Program, a student must apply for the program prior to withdrawing from public center. The student must also have an Individual Education Plan (IEP), and:

  Have been enrolled and reported for funding in a Florida public center during the October and February Florida Education Finance Program surveys (Grades K-12); or
     
  Have been a pre-kindergarten student who was enrolled and reported for funding in a Florida public center during the preceding October and February Florida Education Finance Program surveys and was at least 4 years old; or
     
  Have attended the Florida center for the Deaf and Blind during the preceding October and February student membership surveys (Grades K-12).
